Now and Then | Nicole French

I had the pleasure of working with Nicole at Cranebrook HIgh School for a number of years. An extraordinary teacher who could get things done before most people could think about it. I moved on from there and Nicole went to Singleton High the following year. She’s now doing great work there, some of which you can read about here.

“In December ABC Open held a workshop with students and community members at Singleton Library, which resulted in a new visual take on history, putting from the old images into a contemporary setting.

Singleton High School visual arts teacher Nicole French said the students found the project challenging and rewarding.

Now and Then is a project that takes old images back to the original location they were originally photographed, and rephotographing the old images lined up against the contemporary background.

The results of Now and Then workshops all over regional Australia can be seen at the project gallery at the ABC Open site, and can be searched by Now or Then dates.”

Art world up in arms over ‘light bulb’ law

“London. The art world has reacted with astonishment to a European ruling which has determined that works by Bill Viola and Dan Flavin, when disassembled, should not be considered works of art for tax purposes. Dealers warn that the decision will inhibit the European art trade.”

The Veil

This was one of my earlier fractal animation videos, (original soundtrack). I guess it’s logical to show this in the light of talking about working with students who are submitting video as part of their HSC body of work. This work was exhibited at last years Digital Fringe in Melbourne and screened internationally as part of that festival. I think it’s relevant and also good that students see that the person teaching them also practices.

What’s also interesting is that it was through learning about it, i.e., to teaching students how to edit and work with video, that my eyes were opened to the possibilities, and I became interested in working with this art form.

Frank O. Gehry Since 1997 at Vitra Design Museum

The Vitra Design Museum is the first building that Frank O. Gehry realized in Europe. In total there are four buildings by Frank Gehry in the Basel region: the Vitra furniture factory and the Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, the Vitra headquarters in Birsfelden, and the building on the Novartis campus in Basel.

On display at the Design Museum are 12 projects,  in the form of large competition models, original drawings by the architect, and developmental models from the Gehry Partners archive. Among the projects shown are the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Museum, the DZ Bank Building in Berlin, the Neue Zollhof in Düsseldorf, the AGO Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, the Ray and Maria Stata Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago, the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, the IAC Building in New York, and the Beekman Street Housing skyscraper in New York.

In the video below, Jochen Eisenbrand talks about the concept of the exhibition, the importance of Frank Gehry’s work for architecture, how he got the commission

Women Photographers at MoMA

“At MoMA’s Pictures by Women: A History of Modern Photography it is clear that not only are there numerous great female photographers; they might be the form’s best practitioners. The show is like a party with an immaculately edited guest list. You look at the exhibition check-list the next day and realise there weren’t many, if any, disappointments.”

The exhibition runs May 2010 to March 2011
